I’m Stephen Donnersmith, an abstract artist in Portland, Maine. I work with acrylics and mixed media – scraped, dragged and sometimes flung to the canvas – to explore themes of time, chaos and decline.

I love abstract painting for its pure sensuality. It gives shape to the invisible and liberates art from depiction of the visible world, opening up a boundless exploration of colors and forms and articulating otherwise indescribable realms of emotion.

The textures of decay, the beauty in abandonment, the tension between presence and absence and the transient nature of urban life are my inspiration – the temporary, the abused and the overlooked. My process is rooted in the traces left behind.
