Matt Blackwell ’77
I am a painter and sculptor who has lived for the last thirty years in New York City. My beginnings as a painter were in Maine, where I primarily worked from from nature. My work currently focuses on my experiences in a rapidly changing world. I am interested in parables, my protagonists often are at a crossroads of choice, or their fates are sealed. I don’t always have a set idea when I begin painting. I prefer to conjure paintings from paint rather than illustrating a fixed idea. Sources for my painting come from my own experiences, something overheard, or recalled, along with music and my readings in fiction and history. I try to keep my process and technique open, exploratory and experimental.
