Margaret Leonard ’82
I have been painting, drawing and making for 45+ years. I was born and raised in Brunswick, Maine. After earning a BFA from Portland School of Art (MECA) in 1982 I continued my practice with both plein air and working from my imagination. I have attended a number of artist residencies since 1996 with my first being on Monhegan Island. At this time, I was working with caran d’ache on water color paper. This was a perfect medium for me on the island and future residencies as it enabled me to explore for the day (with materials in a pack on my back), and set up at different spots and work. Currently I am working with acrylic on canvas and collage and mixed media on water color paper. My work has evolved from documenting the landscape with it’s light and energy into more of a personal statement about place or subject matter. This can emerge as more of an abstraction on a theme. Whatever the results I am always striving to have a dialogue with my work, to respond honestly and to find balance in each piece.
