Painting allows me to see and vice versa. I would miss a backlit forest or a path disappearing into the horizon, all kinds of sequences, shapes, reflections, and color contrasts if I didn’t know that these elements in nature would need to be retrieved from memory later. A sketch and/or photograph are helpful resources when I am painting in the studio, but I am not a representational artist by any stretch. The most gratifying part of my lifelong practice as a painter is the exchange: making marks on wood, paper or canvas allows me to better appreciate and value the places I walk, cycle, ski, and live in.
