Chris Reed is a landscape painter in Portland, ME. He received his BA in visual arts from Bowdoin College, but is largely self-taught, undergoing independent study in Europe in addition to his plein air work along the coast of Maine. His paintings have been exhibited throughout New England. Artist Statement As a landscape painter, I am always developing a greater awareness and connection to the natural environment. My objective in oil painting is to reflect the beauty of nature by capturing light in various states, whether it be along the ocean, on a wooded trail, or from a mountain top. I find inspiration through American Tonalism, the paintings of Turner, Whistler, and Monet. Each painting is conceived in the moment, loosely based on plein air studies, along with the memory and feeling of a particular place. I want others to be inspired by the play of light upon a given landscape, interpreting meaning as one chooses. Ultimately I hope my work brings about a sense of peace and well-being.
