Michael E. Vermette ’80

Michael E. Vermette considers himself an expressive
impressionist with a flair in plein air painting. His
methods emphasize capturing light with an emotional
sense of place. His thick impasto oil and bold watercolor methods,
are rooted in traditional approaches that he feels captures the mood
and soul of his subjects. Michael graduated from the Maine College
of Art and Design with a BFA degree in 1980. Soon after he married
his first nations wife and continued his studies in art education at the
University of Maine at Orono. After receiving his certification he
became the first Art teacher for the Penobscot Tribal Nation through Maine Indian
Education. After 36 years of being an artist/teacher, Michael retired in 2022 to paint full time. His paintings have won numerous awards, appearing in different competitions and juried shows in Maine and New England. He is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society, and has received several artist residencies in Maine and New Hampshire. He is represented by Gleason Fine Art, Yarmouth Frame and Art Gallery and the Lupine Gallery on Monhegan, all located in Maine where he resides.
