Judith Allen-Efstathiou
I live six months a year in Portland, Maine and six months in Athens, Greece and exhibit my work in both Europe and the United States. My artwork is informed by my negotiations between these two cultures and explores my two major concerns: historic preservation and environmental protection. I am a rambler on the ancient footpaths of Kea Island, Greece and in the woods of Maine where I am drawn to the power and weight of visible history: ancient structures and ancient trees. A commission to repurpose copper removed from the dome of the Maine State House for a sculpture, that now hangs in the Maine State House, lead to a series of relief sculptures of silhouetted trees, acid cut into vintage copper. My sculptures and prints of trees bring the natural beauty of the Maine woods into interior spaces
