Margaret Leonard ’82
Born in the countryside of Brunswick, Maine I had easy access to the natural world: the streams, woods, fields, birds and Maine’s distinctive 4 seasons. The natural world has always been my primary teacher when it comes to painting, drawing and inspiring a composition from which to begin. I went to Maine College of Art and Design from 1978-1982 back when it was called PSA. I received a strong foundation there on the basics of seeing. Through the following years I attended artist in residency programs which gave me time to focus on my work, away from the daily grind of making money. Most recently I attended NEIRO, a residency in Prague, Czech Republic for the month of March. I continued my current practice of painting my surroundings which has been my main focus for the past 3 or 4 years. I also work with collage which may result in more abstract expressions. Social and political events are also an inspiration for me.
